Comm0ut says:

You can cover the filter with a piece of panty hose like most other vacuums. I haven't bought a new shop vac filter in many years (and have several shop vacs I use often). Give it a try. It's a very, very old way to save money on filters. While Desert Shield made that old off-road trick famous for vehicle air filters it also works on computers and other electronics used in dusty conditions. The Makita filter is shaped like a drink cup. Pull the foot cut from panty hose over the filter and tuck inside the filter support frame, then install filter as normal.
I also clipped my Pelican LED flashlight to the nozzle holding clip included on the inlet tube for use in dark locations.

I've got the Bosch Blue stick vac and it's useless. I wish Makita would make a proper Dyson clone that fits the 18v platform.

I have one of these.. honestly it's only great if you do mods. I removed all the exhaust filter material and the flap you mentioned. Flow is much better and it actually sucks now.
