Hi I did the same as you I took the old house vacuum but mine has a paper bag in it's karcher and I have been sanding now for about 10-12 hours with out cleaning or changing the bag and it works great

John – put a pool filter on your filter in the shopvacs, it'll keep the filter from choking on the dust. Then add a cyclone and you'll never even need to clean your pool filter off. Try it.

Go to harbor freight and get a dust separator and a 5 gallon bucket. It's been 3 years and I have not even touched my shop vac filter.
Also I ran a hose from the outlet of the shop vac to a hole in the wall so now it blows outside and is way more quiet.
