In this video I share some basic maintenance tips for the Dyson Fluffy cordless vacuum cleaner. I show the Fluffy in the video, but most of these tips will apply to all models in the V6 range.
You can separate cyclone part from motor unit by pushing two white clips between both parts. Then you can fully wash cyclone part under running water and it will be like new.
As I pointed out in one of my own videos on this subject, those cone shaped filters always fill with dust, hairs, and other fine debris on the inside, so they need plunging in water several times, and held upside down, so the water drains out and brings out all the accumulated debris inside the cone. Do not assume the filter is clean just by looking at the outside of it – its whats inside it that will clog the machine's airflow. These filters must be washed each month or suction loss will become more severe the longer it is left unwashed – eventually, as Roger pointed out, the motor will start pulsing, as it is choked of airflow from the filter being totally clogged with dust on the inside of the cone.
Hi roger our fluffy filter was blocked inside, the three tabs at the top can be undone with your finger nails and inside it was full of crud and hair. No amount of washing would remove this. The filter can be removed from the plastic cage.

Did the pulsating noise stop after you'd cleaned it, Roger, or did you find another cause?

Dyson filters filter from the inside out so they will always look clean no matter how clogged they are, as you figured.
I enjoy these maintenance videos because I love looking after my vacuum cleaners as one should.
