What is the Dyson V12 Detect Slim Vacuum?
Dyson’s V12 Detect Slim is a compact and cordless laser-enabled stick vacuum designed to be a lighter and more portable version than the recent Dyson Outsize Absolute +, which I reviewed earlier this year. According to Dyson, this version weighs just under 5 pounds and is made for small to medium-sized homes.

The new Dyson V12 Detect Slim is all about being small, easy, and light to tote around the house with. It has a modestly-sized dustbin, cleaning heads, and a single battery that is easily rechargeable (with up to 60 minutes of runtime).
3-Key Cleaning Heads
There are three main cleaning heads in Dyson V12 and several accessories that come with it.
Detangling Motorbar cleaning head
Laser Slim Fluffy cleaner head
Mini Hair Screw Tool
Charging and Battery Life
Battery life on the Dyson V12 Detect Slim vacuum is reasonable; you should be able to get at least 60 minutes of run time on a single charge. Fully charging one of the batteries will take a lengthy 4.5 hours using Dyson’s included AC wall plug, and your battery life is displayed on the rear screen.
Filtration data
Another great, new feature of this vacuum is the data you get about what your vacuum is inhaling! On the rear info screen, you can see a count and analysis of the size of dust particles that are coming in via Dyson’s multi-stage filtration system, and Dyson boasts that the filter is fully sealed. They also claim that the filter is able to trap 99.99% of microscopic particles and allergens, even as small as 0.3 microns.
Cleaning with Dyson V12 Detect Slim
This vacuum is really easy to use, is light, and feels like it’s doing a solid job. You can use the attachments on the end of the extension hose or plug right into the dustbin handle for a more hand-held sort of vacuuming.
The accessories and brush/roller heads snap in and out quickly with no pulling or yanking required, which is great.
Overall review: Dyson V12 Detect Slim
Overall, Dyson V12 Detect Slim is easily the best compact stick vacuum you can buy in this price range.
When it comes to the pros: it’s powerful, has an automatically adjustable suction, and has an incredible variety of tools and accessories (not to mention a good battery life). The laser sighting works wonders, plus the new ‘Hair Screw Tool’ doesn’t tangle. The downsides? Given its size, the dustbin fills up rather quickly, at least in our two-dog home. It also takes a while to charge, which is expensive.

Thank you for this amazing review
Does it needs to be on the charger whole time or only when the battery low?
I just bought one, and oh my god do I love it!
Lasers make everything better. Ex, Sharks with frickin lasers
I got a V12 and it is a decent cleaner. My only concerns are the dust gun like empty mechanism and the mostly useless max mode that runs only for 8 minutes and adds a major stress to the batteries.
I have a robot vacuum that picks up a lot of dirt. Then I hit it with this vacuum to fully clean the house. I got wood floor and tile. It really does a good job. It’s not expensive. It’s a good investment. Got it on sale too. Great review. Now I need to see how to clean the area where the dirt goes,
I have the Dyson V15 and it is fantastic. I was also a sceptic of the laser tech, but I'll be damn is works great!
The trigger has a history of breaking, that’s the problem, join a Dyson forum and you’ll see. Dyson quality is poor at best, but alas when it works it’s great. I got the V12 to replace my broken 2 yr old V10. The laser head is not a gimmick, it’s amazing actually, you can really see things not visible before. Just hope it doesn’t break lol, my 12 yr old says the plastics look cheap and I would agree. Again when everything is working It’s a great product.
Great piece of machinery. I have just purchased this model, its next level in cleaning especially with the new laser technology Won't disappoint 😊
Just have to say this. When you use the Dyson holding it in a normal manner, it’s a no biggie to use the other hand that’s free to push the start button. That’s not an issue. That’s what I want on all devices from now on. Just had to say this. Thank you for the review.
Thanks, Erin.
"the power of an upright"
24v (battery) vs 120v (outlet). Physics would disagree.
Google it. Average upright. 500 to 3000 watts. This Vac? 150…
you know…physics.
Great review!
Thanks for mentioning how it handles your "2-dog home." Good to know how fast it would fill up in our 2 dog, 2 cat home.
I have a V8 and I'm needing my 3rd battery in it. They only last about 18 months, in my experience, then the performance rapidly degrades. They have to be treated as regular consumables and mine is $143 CDN from Dyson. I've tried 2 Chinese knock-off batteries from Amazon and they are garbage. One lasted 2 months before dying, so they sent me a 2nd one, which lasted maybe 6 months. The OEM batteries shouldn't cost more than $50 when you're paying this much for a plastic vacuum.
Great review! I'd love to see one on the Dyson v15, too.
Great review as always.. And Erin flexing those red toe nails too ! 😁
I agree about tthe locking trigger.
Great review
